Abstract

The aim of the present study was to increase the knowledge regarding cataract among old age people in selected community area of Jammu province.

Objectives of the study were

  1. To assess the pretest knowledge score regarding cataract among old age people in a selected community area of Jammu province.
  2. To assess the post test knowledge score regarding cataract among old age people in a selected community area of Jammu province.
  3. To determine the impact of structured teaching program on knowledge score regarding cataract among old age people in a selected community area of Jammu province by comparing pre test and post test knowledge score.
  4. To determine the association of pretest knowledge score regarding cataract among old age people in a selected community area of Jammu province with the selected demographic variables.

Methodology

The study was based on Ludwig vonbertalanffy general system theory. quantitative research approach was used. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the sample. Totally 100 old age people were taken for the study. Structured knowledge questionnaire was used to collect the data. Descriptive and inferential statistics was used to analyse the data.

Result

In pre test 10% old age people were had inadequate knowledge. After implementation of structured teaching programme in post test, more than half of the old age people had adequate knowledge (97%) and 3 per cent of the old age people had moderate knowledge.

The over all mean pre test knowledge score was 70.30 with the standard deviation of 2.678. The overall mean post test knowledge score was 89.70 with the standard deviation of 1.262

The pre test mean knowledge score was increased from 70.30 to 89.70 in post test. The obtained overall mean difference between the post test and pre test was 19.4. The comparison of mean pre-test and post-test knowledge score regarding knowledge of cataract among old age people shows that the mean post-test knowledge score was higher than the mean pre-test knowledge. Paired t test was used to find the significant difference between the mean pre-test and post-test knowledge scores. Result was highly significant in the experimental group. Hence the research hypothesis (H1) was accepted and null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It was concluded that the mean post-test knowledge score was high as compared to mean pre-test knowledge score and that difference is due to the exposure of planned teaching program to old age people regarding cataract.

Conclusion

Majority of the study subjects had moderate knowledge regarding cataract which indicates that they need to get awareness about the cataract.
