Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus, once considered a minor health issue, has become a major global threat in the twenty-first century. The prevalence of type II diabetes has risen sharply, exceeding earlier projections and reaching epidemic levels worldwide. The World Health Organization defines diabetes as a metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia due to defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. It is now one of the most common non-communicable diseases globally and is a leading cause of death in both developed and developing nations.
Methods: A review of relevant literature and global health reports was conducted to assess the prevalence of diabetes, its complications, and the impact of self-care practices. Data from international organizations and peer-reviewed studies were analyzed to determine the relationship between patient knowledge, self-management behaviors, and diabetes outcomes.
Results: Diabetes is associated with serious complications such as coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, neuropathy, amputations, renal failure, and blindness. These complications lead to increased disability, reduced life expectancy, and high healthcare costs. Poor self-care practices and inadequate patient understanding were identified as major factors contributing to disease progression and the development of largely preventable complications.
Conclusion: Effective self-care practices and improved patient education are crucial for controlling diabetes and reducing complications. Enhancing patient awareness and promoting self-management can significantly decrease the global burden of diabetes and improve health outcomes.
