Abstract

Geriatric nursing plays a critical role in addressing the unique healthcare needs of the aging population, which is steadily increasing worldwide, including in India. The role of geriatric nurses in providing comprehensive
care—ranging from chronic disease management to palliative care—is discussed, with an emphasis on person centered care, multidisciplinary team approaches, and the integration of technology in care delivery. Despite the advancements, challenges such as inadequate training, understaffing, cultural barriers, and ageism persist, hindering the quality of care for older adults. Looking forward, the development of specialized roles such as geriatric nurse practitioners, expanded use of telehealth, and increased emphasis on research and policy advocacy are seen as key to addressing these challenges.
