Abstract

Chronic diseases, particularly non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, and cancer, have become a significant health burden in India. With NCDs accounting for over 60% of deaths, effective management is crucial to reducing morbidity and mortality. Nurses play a central role in preventing and managing these diseases, offering critical services in health promotion, disease monitoring, patient education, and emotional support. As frontline healthcare providers, nurses facilitate early detection, promote lifestyle changes, and provide continuous care for patients with chronic conditions. Additionally, they contribute to multidisciplinary healthcare teams and public health research,
influencing both patient outcomes and health policies. Despite the vital role they play, nurses in India face challenges such as inadequate training, workforce shortages, and cultural and economic barriers to
effective chronic disease management. Addressing these challenges through improved education, staffing, and policy changes can enhance the contribution of nurses and ultimately improve the healthcare system’s ability to manage chronic diseases in India.
